How to Buy crab meat on a budget

Not to be confused with those orange and white sticks you find everywhere, real crab meat comes in a round tin package and usually stored in the seafood or chilled section at the grocery store.

These are usually more inexpensive pieces of meat in smaller portions. They average around £3 -£5 here in the UK, so if your on a budget like me, this is the best option for real crab meat at an affordable price. I used 100g tin of Ocean Isle Premium crab meat for £4 at my local Sainsbury’s Grocery.

If you are looking for large lump crab meat I suggest looking at a specialty grocer, fish market or online. You will get much larger lump crab and more quality portions however, these will definitely come at a cost.

How to make crab fried rice on a budget

First, season the crab meat. Place pan on medium heat, melt the butter then add your crab meat and seasonings. Cook for 5 minutes or until flavors combine. Put a bit of crab meat aside to garnish your rice after its cooked.

In a separate pan, heat oil and place in your eggs. scramble the eggs and remove from pan. Add in scallions, onions and peppers. Cook until onions and peppers are near tender then add your rice, and frozen peas. Return the scrambled eggs to the pan.

Once the rice has incorporated well, add in the soy sauce and sesame oil. Use the remaining crab meat to garnish your rice.

Finally, finish it off with old bay and fresh herbs. I like to use fresh parsley and spring onion. This dish yields between 2 – 4 servings, depending on your portion sizes.

  1. I definitely plan to try this!! Oddly enough, I have some crab in my refrigerator too! I also have some crab legs that I can add to it!

  2. This crab fried rice looks great! I live in the US and I’ve never had any trouble finding canned (or fresh) crab where I live. I agree with you, I think canned crab is just as good and much more convenient for recipes! I can’t wait to try this one! Thank you for posting!

    1. Thanks so much! Crab meat is so accessible here but very expensive for the large juicy lump meat. I was happy to see good quality for under £5! Thanks for commenting!
