A Quick Guide to Bermuda Codfish Breakfast
Its Sunday. You wake up to the delicious aroma of buttery fish and potatoes boiling away on the stove with a slight hint of coffee. That’s what Breakfast in Bermuda is like in most Bermudian households.

Cod Fish breakfast is Bermuda’s version of Ackee and Saltfish (Jamaica) or Saltfish Buljol and Bakes (Trinidad and Barbados), to name a few. This is usually served on a Sunday morning, however you can order this any day of the week from most local restaurants.
What is Cod Fish Breakfast
A standard Codfish Breakfast consists of: Salted Cod, usually thicker cuts of salted fish, boiled potatoes and either a butter and onion or tomato and onion based sauce.
This is all served together with a side of boiled egg, ripe banana, sliced avocado and for many, a nice helping of mayonnaise.
Let’s talk Sauce
Here are two ways to eat a Bermuda Codfish Breakfast:
BUTTER SAUCE
Butter sauce is simply butter, onions, garlic, salt and pepper and fresh parsley.
TOMATO SAUCE
Tomato or red sauce consist of stewed tomatoes or ketchup, onions, butter, salt and pepper and fresh parsley or thyme.
There are Two types of Bermudians
There are two ways to eat CF&P. Some people eat their potatoes and fish separately, neatly clearing through each section. And then you have people like me: Mash up everything together! Mix the sweet and salt, the tomato and the mayo. OMG it’s the tastiest dish, especially after a good night out.
No matter how you like to eat it, be sure to try it with all the trimmings. It goes really well with a side of Johnny cakes for that extra Bermudian flair.
How To Make Bermuda Cod Fish & Potato
Bermuda Cod Fish and Potato Breakfast is a traditional Bermudian Breakfast served on Sundays with Tomato or Butter sauce, Banana and Boiled Egg.

For Thinner cuts of salt fish, wash and soak in hot water 30 minutes before cooking.
After soaking the salt fish, drain and refill with fresh water.
Meanwhile, in a separate pot, boil potatoes with fresh thyme until the potatoes are halfway tender then add salt fish to the pot and continue to boil.
Finally, When salt fish and potatoes are both soft, turn off the pot and serve.
To Start, wash the salt fish and soak salt fish overnight. Once it has soaked overnight drain the salt fish, fill a pot with water and place the fish in the pot.
Next, Bring the pot of fish to a boil and let cook for at least an hour or until fish starts to soften. This is the first boiling stage, as the fish is very thick it will be salty.
To Finish, dump out the water and refill with fresh water followed by fresh thyme and potatoes then continue to boil until both fish and potatoes are soft.
First, heat the pan and add a splash of oil followed by the fresh thyme, onion and garlic.
Second, once the onions are translucent, put in the butter, tomato paste, ketchup and water. Season with salt & pepper.
Last, let the sauce thicken and serve.
